ONF International, IGN FI and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), have produced a methodology for assessing the carbon storage capacities of mangroves in the different compartments.
According to Adrien Moiret, remote sensing & GIS expert, “the preservation of mangroves is of crucial importance because of their major role in the ecological balance of our planet. These particular ecosystems, which develop in coastal areas, are home to exceptional biodiversity and contribute significantly to coastal protection.
These unique ecosystems are threatened by many human activities such as urbanisation, logging, aquaculture and agriculture. These practices have led to a considerable decrease in the area of mangroves worldwide, with a loss of almost 20% of their surface area over the last 30 years”.
