The results of the forest and wildlife inventory project, which took place in Ivory Coast from 2019 to 2021, will be presented at the 15th World Forestry Congress, to be held from 2 to 6 May 2022 in Seoul.
The WFC will be a reminder that the fauna and flora of Ivory Coast are close to a critical threshold on the road to extinction. At the current rate of deforestation and forest degradation, the forests will cover less than 2 million hectares by 2035 and many species will have disappeared by then.
However, beyond the indisputable facts, this presentation is also a source of hope. Indeed, by accepting this inventory and the presentation of the conclusions in June 2021 on the occasion of the end-of-project seminar, Ivory Coast has implicitly recognised the urgency of the situation in its country, but also more globally in the sub-region, with Togo and Ghana unfortunately finding themselves in similar situations.
Cancelled in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic, the new dates of the event will allow the Congress to take advantage of the dynamics created by the various COPs (COP26 of the UNFCCC, COP15 of the CBD and COP15 of the UNCCD), the IUCN World Conservation Congress and the UN Summit on Food Systems.
The IFFN in Ivory Coast was implemented by ONFI, IGN and IGN FI, with operational support from SODEFOR (Société de Développement des Forêts) for the forest inventory, OIPR (Office Ivoirien des Parcs et Réserves) for the wildlife inventory and ANADER (Agence Nationale d’Appui au Développement Rural) for the socio-economic component.
