In November 2023, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and VITO signed a four-year framework contract for the deployment of the Copernicus LCFM service, marking a significant step forward in environmental monitoring.

This service extends and enhances the 100m resolution layers of Copernicus Global Land Cover and integrates lessons learned from ESA’s Horizon2020 WorldCover and REDDCopernicus projects to provide a dynamic global land cover service at 10m resolution for the years 2020-2026.

VITO leads the consortium for the deployment of LCFM, with contributions from IGN FI, alongside partners such as GAF, GeoVille, GFZ, IIASA, Sinergise, and Telespazio Ibérica. IGN FI will provide its expertise in the validation and quality control of the data produced.

The LCFM contract begins in January 2024, initiating a ten-month ramp-up phase. During this period, the workflow will be tested and refined on a subset representing approximately 10% of the total land surface. Large-scale production of annual products will begin after evaluation, with the first public results expected in early 2025. The service will then extend to cover the years 2021 to 2026.
