In many countries in the Global South, a continuum of land systems and tenure regimes is observed, ranging from the most informal (unregistered occupation) to the most formal (certificate or title). At the turn of the 21st century, a general trend towards the formalization of land tenure and the need for enhanced security of land rights has emerged. The land issue has thus become strategic and is now central to sustainable development processes. It is now established that good land governance positively influences economic development, social cohesion, food security, and poverty reduction. This dynamic leads to land reforms aimed at recognizing and protecting land rights, identifying best practices for land rights registration and transfer, and ensuring that land administration systems are accessible and affordable.
Geographic information is an essential component, through the collection and updating of cadastral data. The development of Land Information Systems (LIS) integrates not only these geographic components but also the various modules related to land registry management.
